As Chief Deputy Commissioner, Smith oversees the core business functions of one of North Carolina’s largest state agencies, supporting agriculture, consumer protection, food safety, and regulatory programs across the state. His work plays a vital role in maintaining North Carolina’s strong agricultural economy and ensuring the safety and quality of products used by residents every day.
Smith began his career with the department in 1972, bringing more than five decades of experience in public service. He holds a degree in biological and agricultural engineering from North Carolina State University.
In addition to his leadership within the department, Smith has served as Chairman of ASTM International, a globally recognized organization that develops voluntary consensus standards, and has held numerous leadership roles in national organizations focused on weights, measures, and regulatory standards.
